Yellowstone Journal: Can the YVO Quell Public Concerns?

YOWUSA.COM, 26-September-03
Dave Wright

Yellowstone

Can the YVO
Quell Public
Concerns?Faced with mounting public concerns and the need to balance science with the economic interests of businesses in the Yellowstone region, the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory (YVO) is moving to quell these concerns.  There is no question that should the YVO begin to see compelling hard data, that it will sound an alarm.  In the meantime, there are many people who are satisfied to go about their business until an “official” alert is sounded.  This article, which is the first of an ongoing series, will offer relevant information to those with the desire to follow the current issues of increased geothermal and seismic activity in Yellowstone National Park.

The information in this article provided was acquired from geologists, news sources near Yellowstone, the USGS and the YVO and readers are encouraged to this and subsequent articles in this ongoing series to vet this information to their own satisfaction. To those of you who live in the Yellowstone area or are privy to useful information, please E-mail that information to me at <dave@yowusa.com>.

When discussing this series of articles with YOWUSA.COM publisher Marshall Masters, his instructions were clear.  “We have no political concerns.  We need to give people the facts on ongoing basis so they can verify your reports and then trust to their own sense of responsibility.”  When I asked him if there would ever be a single definitive story, he replied, “There can only be one definitive story and this is the one we hope to God we’ll never publish.”

Say One Thing and Monitor for Another

According to an August 2003 Yellowstone Seismicity Summary, The University of Utah Seismograph Stations reported a 4.4 earthquake occurring on August 21, 2003 near Huckleberry Mountain in northwest Wyoming, 9 miles southeast of the south entrance to Yellowstone National Park and 9 miles northeast of Jackson Lake.  This summary also states that it is unlikely that there is a connection between the earthquake and the increased hydrothermal activity at Norris Geyser Basin (35 miles from the epicenter of earthquake) or at the other hydrothermal features at Yellowstone Lake.  The reason this summary states that there is no connection because the earthquake may be related to a tectonic fault zone that runs through Yellowstone.

August 2003 Yellowstone Seismicity Summary

The University of Utah Seismograph Stations reports that a magnitude 4.4 earthquake occurred at 01:46 a.m. (MDT) on Thursday, August 21.  The epicenter of the shock was located near Huckleberry Mountain in northwest Wyoming, 9 miles southeast of the south entrance to Yellowstone National Park and 9 miles northeast of Jackson Lake.  The earthquake was reported felt in Yellowstone National Park at the South Entrance , at Grant Village and in northern Jackson Hole.

The earthquake may be related to a tectonic fault zone that extends south from the Red Mountains in Yellowstone south into the Teton Wilderness.

It is unlikely that there is a connection or triggering mechanism of the earthquake with the increased hydrothermal activity at Norris Geyser Basin, which is about 35 miles from the epicenter (see below), or with hydrothermal features in Yellowstone Lake that have received recent publicity.

Yet, the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory (YVO) has deployed a temporary network of seismographs, GPS receivers, and temperature loggers in response to the increased activity in parts of the Norris Geyser Basin

USGS,7-August- 2003
TEMPORARY HYDROTHERMAL MONITORING PROGRAM TO BEGIN AT NORRIS GEYSER BASIN

In response to notably increased heat and steam emissions in parts of Norris Geyser Basin, the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory will deploy a temporary network of seismographs, Global Positioning System (GPS ) receivers, and temperature loggers. The temporary deployment is intended to document chemical and physical signals that accompany this increased activity, to identify the underground locations of hydrothermal steam sources and the relationship of the Norris geyser basin to the background general seismicity, and crustal deformation of the Yellowstone caldera.  It may also detect any precursory signals to geyser eruptions and hydrothermal explosions.

In fact, the Norris Geyser Basin has been closed since July 23, 2003 because of new mud pots, changes in geyser activity, and 200 degree Fahrenheit ground temperatures.

USGS,7-August- 2003
TEMPORARY HYDROTHERMAL MONITORING

PROGRAM TO BEGIN AT NORRIS GEYSER BASIN

The Norris Back Basin has been closed since July 23, 2003, after formation of new mud pots, changes in geyser activity, and significantly increased ground temperatures (up to 200 degrees Fahrenheit) in some areas near the Back Basin trail. Additional observations include vegetation dying due to thermal activity and the changing of several geysers' eruption intervals.  The heightened rate of steam discharge has continued to the present time.

Furthermore, there were growing concerns from residents and visitors to the Yellowstone area regarding a “bulge” that was discovered beneath Yellowstone Lake.  On the YVO website, the YVO tries to answer some of these concerns.

USGS, 24-September-2003
What's New at YVO?

Recent articles in the press reported a "bulge" beneath Yellowstone Lake and have generated some concern about possible dangers for residents or visitors to the area. Below, we answer some questions we've been asked by the public and press.

After reading what the YVO had to say on their website, one cannot help but think that the YVO is not sure what the true cause of this “bulge” is and it’s potential eruption hazard because no concrete facts were presented.  Even after the lack of concrete facts, and historical facts, to support the YVO’s responses on their website, the YVO continues to tell the public that an eruption is unlikely because all active features are related to faults and hydrothermal vents.  Where are the historical facts to prove this?  If there was nothing to be concerned about, then why is the YVO sending out a geological hazard assessment team to assess the potential hazards at Yellowstone?  To collect data for a future event?  If so, how far is the YVO looking into the future?  It stands to reason that there is always more than one reason in performing data analysis, especially with something that has the potential to affect us dramatically.

A revealing public reaction, after the YVO said that they have received questions from concerned residents and visitors in the Yellowstone area regarding the “bulge” in Yellowstone Lake.  According to The Jackson Hole News & Guide, Yellowstone National Park superintendent (Suzanne Lewis) stated that tourists showed little reaction after park officials explained to them the reason for the Norris Geyser basin closure. This is a puzzling response, given the clear evidence of increased activity and high ground temperatures in the Yellowstone area.

Norris geysers prompt closure

Part of Norris Geyser Basin is getting too hot to handle, according to a Yellowstone National Park Superintendent Suzanne Lewis who decided Wednesday to close the area.

High ground temperatures and increased steam eruptions led Lewis to close the western part of Back Basin trail at Norris to tourists and most park employees.  Park staff have measured ground temperatures of up to 200 degrees Fahrenheit and recorded changing geyser activity.Vixen Geyser has been erupting more frequently , and Echinus Geyser has been erupting at more regular intervals.  Even Porkchop Geyser, dormant since it exploded in 1989, is steaming again.

At West Yellowstone Visitor Center, 28 miles southwest of Norris, Marysue Costello said visitor center staff had heard stories of new thermal activity before the closure was announced.  On Wednesday, she and other staff explained the closure to tourists, who showed little reaction.

According to park officials, they closed the Back Basin trail after detecting increased activity.  Park officials also measured ground temperatures of 200 degrees Fahrenheit in the area and have observed dying vegetation due to shifting thermal activity.  Yet these same park officials say that closure of the Back Basin trail only affects a tiny portion of the park.  That’s like saying a splinter in your toe is only going to affect the toe area.  Eventually, the entire area is going to react accordingly if the geothermal activity continues to escalate.

Norris geysers prompt closure

The closure affects only a tiny portion of the park, Matthews said. It encompasses 5,800 feet of 12,500 feet of trails in the geyser basin.

Park officials decided to close the Back Basin trail after detecting increased activity, beginning July 11.  Several geyser pools drained, creating steam vents, an indication the basin was heating up, park officials said.  Also, park staff measured ground temperatures of 200 degrees Fahrenheit - an unacceptably high level for visitor and employee safety, park officials said.

On July 16, park staff discovered a new mud pot and other thermal features forming in the Back Basin.  That same day, Porkchop Geyser erupted for the first time 24 years.  Porkchop Geyser regularly let off steam from 1985 until it exploded in '89 and went dormant.  Park staff also have observed dying vegetation due to shifting thermal activity.

The idea of a tiny portion of the park being closed because of unusual increase activity is like a small hole in a blimp.  Eventually, the blimp is going to rupture.

Before all this excitement at Norris Geyser Basin began, in July and August of 2000, there was a swarm of earthquakes that generated interest because it coincided with the activity at Norris Geyser today.

Could We See Two Suns in Five Years?

Is it possible we live in a binary solar system with two suns? According to NASA, over 80% of all solar systems have multiple suns, and the historical accounts contained in The Kolbrin Bible, suggest it could be Sol's unborn twin. A destructive brown dwarf  larger than the planet Jupiter, known to the ancients as the Destroyer.

In July and August of 2000, a swarm of small quakes generated interest because it coincided with significant changes in hydrothermal activity at Norris.

Park staff and other scientists have no evidence of volcanic activity at the basin, she said.  But in any geothermal area, the possibility of steam eruptions always exists, park officials stress.

The above information is interesting because the swarm of earthquakes that occurred in July and August of 2000 were never reported to the public via the news.

To add to the increasing activity occurring around the Norris Geyser Basin area, the park superintendent also closed the Gibbon, Madison and Firehole rivers because of rising temperatures.  According to park officials, this closure is not related to activity at Norris Geyser.  How can this be?  Everything in the park is interconnected.  When one portion of the park is affected, the whole park is affected eventually.  In addition, park officials say that the rise in the river temperatures is due to air temperature and water level-not geothermal activity.  If we follow this logic then it means that the air temperature must be extremely hot to the point of residents and visitors to the park not being able to going outside without risking their health.

Norris geysers prompt closure

The recent closures of the Gibbon, Madison and Firehole rivers are not related to the thermal activity at Norris.  Lewis closed the rivers because of rising temperatures, which are affected primarily by air temperature and water level - not geothermal activity, park officials said.

In the final outcome, it appears that the YVO does not have all the facts to make a sound decision on future events at Yellowstone National Park.  We have plenty of evidence to show that a volcanic eruption is possible yet we are told that it is unlikely that it will.  We are told that closure of Back Basin is only a small portion of the park and will not affect the rest of the park. Nevertheless, we know that the whole is affected eventually if part of the whole is affected.  We are also told to believe that the closure of Gibbon, Madison and Firehole rivers are closed because of rising temperatures, which are affected primarily by air temperature-not by geothermal activity. Yet, for this logic to work the surrounding air must be just as dangerously hot as the water.

We Need to Be Concerned and Informed

When it comes down to it, we all just have to read the signs our mother earth is putting up.  The YVO, along with the USGS, can only collect data that their instruments can collect, but the instruments they use are very limited in their abilities.  They do not have all the answers, and they are not gods.  However , while they are diligent hard working scientists with true concern for public safety, they report to a government and that means that they must always walk a fine line between science and politics.

I’d like to thank Rebecca Huntington,Angus M. Thuermer Jr. and the Jackson Hole News & Guide for their contributions and honesty in their reporting on the Norris Geyser Basin article.  As business concern in the region, they are directly or indirectly dependent upon the massive tourism that supports the regional economy.  They have clearly risen above the possible compromises of those concerns to report the news in a fair-minded and factual manner.

With such information at our hands, we can better prepare ourselves for anything that comes our way, and with that, I leave you until the next update.  In the meantime, I urge you stay informed by visiting and watching the Yellowstone web sites.  Be prepared!
