The San Andreas fault line forms the Eastern edge of the Ring of Fire that encircles the Pacific Ocean.  As the Salvadorans bury their dead, those of us who live within harm’s way of the Ring of Fire need to be concerned by the sharp increase in volcanic and seismic activity. We’ve been warned by the prophets and visionaries, and even if you feel these warnings are nonsense, one cannot deny the physical signs.  Something really big could happen -- and soon!

Tragic Loss of Life in El Salvador

The confirmed death toll resulting from last Saturday’s massive 7.6 magnitude earthquake off the coast of El Salvador and its multitude of aftershocks  surpassed 600 Monday evening.  Five hundred people are still missing and feared dead.

Salvador Quake Death Toll Rises to More Than 600

SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador (Reuters) - The confirmed death toll from the devastating earthquake in El Salvador rose to more than 600 on Monday with about 500 people still missing and feared dead.

Strong aftershocks from the 7.6 magnitude quake on Saturday rattled buildings and triggered fresh landslides throughout the day.

Police raised the known toll late on Monday from about 400 dead to 609, with 2,365 people injured and about 38,000 homes throughout the small Central American nation partly or totally destroyed.

Many of the victims were buried under massive mudslides triggered by the biggest quake to hit this coffee-growing nation of 6.2 million people for at least a decade.

President Francisco Flores has ordered 3,000 coffins from Colombia.

The quake, whose epicenter was off the Pacific coast, about 65 miles southeast of the capital, was felt in Guatemala, Nicaragua and Honduras and as far north as Mexico City.

As El Salvador continues the painful process of burying hundreds of victims of last Saturday’s magnitude 7.6 earthquake, one begins to wonder what further disasters are in store for the “Ring of Fire,” specifically the San Andreas Fault.

Japan Concerned on Kobe Anniversary

TOKYO (AP) - As Japan marks the sixth anniversary of the devastating Kobe earthquake this week, a different seismic threat is worrying the country: Mount Fuji.

Researchers have measured a sudden increase of small earthquakes on the volcano, indicating there is movement of magma underneath its snowcapped, nearly symmetrical cone about 65 miles from Tokyo.

In the past, there have only one or two tiny quakes under Fuji per month. But in September, there were 35 - and that rose quickly to 133 in October and 222 in November. The number dropped to 144 in December.

The tremors during those three months accounted for 30 percent of the quakes there in the past 20 years, said Koji Takada of the Central Meteorological Agency's volcano division.

Strong Quake Shakes South Mexico, Felt in Capital

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - A strong earthquake measuring 7.6 in magnitude on the Richter scale shuddered through southern Mexico on Saturday, shaking buildings as far away as the capital,authorities and witnesses said.

There were no immediate reports of deaths, damage or injuries as a result of the earthquake, although magnitudes at such levels can be destructive.

"The quake measured 7.6 on the Richter scale and happened at 11:34 a.m." a spokesman at the National Seismological Office told Reuters, adding it looked to be centered close to the coast of the southwestern state of Chiapas, bordering Guatemala.

Java Island Warned About Volcano

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) - Hundreds of thousands of people on Indonesia's main island of Java have been told to prepare for possible evacuation as officials Thursday predicted that a major volcano might erupt.

For the past few days, Mount Merapi has been spewing hot rock and ash as far as 1 1/2 miles from the crater rim, said Djumarma Wirakusumah, the director of Indonesia's volcanological agency.

"There could be a large eruption in the next few days,"Wirakusumah said. "Government officials have told people to get ready."

Magma Bubbles Up Inside Volcano

MANILA, Philippines (AP) - Scientists issued a preliminary alert as magma bubbled up inside the Mayon volcano Wednesday, less than a year after it erupted and drove 68,000 people from their homes in the southern Philippines.

Lava piles at the crater pit, increased volcanic ash and rising magma are a repeat of the conditions that came before Mayon spewed lava, belched red-hot boulders and blanketed towns with heavy ash last February.

Julio Sabit, of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, said the alert level does not yet warrant evacuation, but that could easily change.

"Something unusual has been happening at Mayon," Sabit said. "Seismicity increased very rapidly so far this month, and the amount of volcanic ash has significantly increased."

KODIAK ISLAND REGION, ALASKA

The following is a release by the United States Geological Survey, National Earthquake Information Center:  A strong earthquake occurred about 65 miles (110 km) southwest of Kodiak, Alaska or about 315 miles (510 km) south-southwest of Anchorage, Alaska at 9:02 AM MST today, Jan 10, 2001 (7:02 AM AST in Alaska).  A PRELIMINARY MAGNITUDE OF 6.7 WAS COMPUTED FOR THIS EARTHQUAKE.   The magnitude and location may change slightly as additional data are received from other seismograph stations. The earthquake was felt at King Salmon, Kodiak and Perryville.  No reports of damage or casualties have been received at this time.

Authorities Say Mexican Volcano Could Erupt Again

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexico's Popocatepetl volcano gave warning signs on Saturday that it could erupt again, just four days after some 41,000 evacuated villagers were allowed to return to their homes, authorities said.

``Seismic activity that is a characteristic prelude to an explosive phase has been noted,'' Mexico's National Disaster Prevention Center (Cenapred) said in a statement. ``This intense (seismic) activity lasted for four minutes.''

On its own, each of these six news reports is an isolated incident.  But when viewed as a whole, the perspective changes and for the worse.  Ask yourself three simple questions:

• Can we afford to ignore this rash of volcanic and seismic events because there were no fatailities?
• Must we ignore these ominous signs because they did not each become another El Salvador?
• If you live near the San Adreas fault, are you prepared in case there is a major earthquake?

There is nothing we can do to prevent a volcanic erruption or an earthquake, but we can prepare ourselves to deal with the possiblity that those of us who live near the Ring of Fire are in real danger.

Prophecy and The Ring of Fire

A recent televison ad by IBM proclaims angrily, “where are the flying cars they promised us?” which only goes to prove the men and women of science prognosticate the future with as much luck as prophets and seers. 

Up to this point in the article, we’ve looked at hard data provided to us by our men and women of science, and it is unsettling to say the least.

“The "Ring of Fire" is more an arch than a ring. It stretches from New Zealand, along the eastern edge of Asia, north across the Aleutian Islands of Alaska, and south along the coast of North and South America. In this ring, most of the world's earthquakes are occurring and over 75% of the world's active and dormant volcanoes exist. The Ring of Fire is located along the borders of the Pacific Plate and two relatively smaller plates adjacent to Central and South America. On ANY given DAY there are numerous earthquakes occurring around this ring. Saturday's powerful earthquake west of El Salvador is but the latest exclamation mark in the growing number of quakes along the Ring of Fire.”

The map below clearly traces the Ring of Fire, shows earthquake activity recorded over the last few days and was obtained from the U.S. Geological Survey National Earthquake Information Service.

As the map shows, the El Salvador quake is the strongest in a cluster of temblors that occurred over the last few days.
